Tipping And Gratuities

How much should a person tip a waiter or waitress? What other kinds of people should receive tips or gratuities?

They have been talking about that on the radio this morning, us brits are not that big on tipping as you are in America as we have a minimum wage which is £6.19 an hour. We normally tip about 10% if in a restaurant after a meal, but we dont tip in a cafe for example. Its normal to tip a hairdresser here and the young trainee who has washed your hair.

I have heard that the standard tip is supposed to be 20 percent, give or take a little. I hope that I don't seem like a cheapskate, but I wish the whole idea of tipping would just go away entirely. It would be whole lot easier on us if prices were raised slightly, and tipping was stopped.

I once worked as a waiter in an Italian restaurant in Salt Lake City, Utah, and part of my pay came from tips. Several times, U.S. Internal Revenue Services agents came in and seized our tips and made us account for every penny of them to prove that we weren't cheating by not reporting our tips on our income tax forms. I didn't keep that job for very long.

Bearing in mind that serving people have the hardest work in the world, dealing with the public, I always overtip; unless there is ample evidence that the person is not giving me good service.

I usually try to find a reason to go 20 percent.
