You could make some really great lasting friendships this way. And there is very little risk in doing it.

I love having online friends.
I can talk to them anytime I want to, whenever it fits my schedule.
I have made many contacts through this group as well as other groups I belong to, so I already have invited people to join this group and then made friends with them.
My perspective is that being friends with someone makes you more open. You disclose things more quickly than with friends who are in the real world. Why? Because we are bonded by similar interests just because we have joined the same group, and similarities are what draws us to other people.
I believe we are more caring, more loving with those we meet online. Yes, there is the possibility of being hurt, but not likely a fight between friends. It is more likely you will just stop hearing from them, or they can "unfriend" you, which has been known to cause significant trauma. But overall, as long as the forum exists, people remain friends.
If you become especially close to some of the folks online, consider offering an email back-up. That way if someone drops off the forum, or is banned, you still have a way of staying in contact with them. You can still retain your anonymity with email and it does allow for more privacy depending upon how much power the admin of the board has. Meaning, can they, do they read your journal entries or PM's?? Nothing online is completely or even remotely private, but email may ensure greater protection.
Because of depression, my friends online have become my main source of socialization.
I wouldn't trade their support for anything.

They are so caring & when I have saved some lives from doing harm to themselves they are so special to me -there no greater Love than having AWESOME friends support when you don't get much in your own home......
