A Life Skills Group Community Group
All are welcome to join our group. We're here to share advice, encouragement, and ideas on how to build better lives for ourselves. We can discuss all aspects of daily living, along with anything else that’s on your mind. Each of us knows a little, and together, we know a lot that can help us each to reach higher and go further in life. There's such a lot...
1.) In elementary school, I used to do horrible in vocabulary and grammar. I even (to my shame) tried to cheat several times during tests. But I kept trying and eventually found a method that worked; it not only improved my spelling and grammar, but it also helped to flex my creativity. Now I peer-edit papers and short stories for classmates and friends, and enjoy writing things for myself.
2.) In a class discussion about a controversial topic, I was the only one who stood up for one particular viewpoint. Essentially, I felt that they were teasing specific types of people, merely because those people were different. My argument wasn't the best or most convincing, and my classmates -and even my teacher- laughed at me for it. A few years later, I took that embarrassment and turned it into determination, and I wrote a persuasive essay on the subject that I received the top score in my class on. Remembering hat helps me to stand my ground when others tease me for my opinions, and reminds me that my opinions are important and are worth hearing.
3.) I tried to host my very first panel at a convention earlier this year, but it ended up in technical troubles, stage fright, and a lot of embarrassment. But a friend had an idea for another that I really liked, and took another shot at it, this time figuring out what went wrong with the last one and seeing how I could change that. A few weeks ago, I was able to talk to a large group more easily, encouraged a lot of people (even shy people!) to share their own thoughts and to speak up, and moderated a really insightful group discussion. Afterwards, a bunch of people came up and told me that had a good time, and wanted me to host another. It helped me, it helped others, and I made a few new friends from it.
Failure is scary, but it can be even more terrifying trying again. But you never know what you can gain from it if you don't stick it out to the end.
I also LOVE, LOVE, LOVE my job. Probably more than I"d love RN
I may still go back one day....
I too used to be TERRIFIED at failing.
With my kids, I try to make failing very comfortable. I tell my kids that it's not where you start...it's where you stop. And that mistakes are an ESSENTIAL part of learning. In effect, if they're NOT making mistakes and/or failing......that they're NOT learning.
Try, struggle, fall down, get up, repeat five hundred thousand times...... Be okay and comortable in yourself as you're doing it......that's Success....no matter what you do or how much you know. Because success is really more about being comfortable with yourself....than about anything else.
And that's a great thing to teach your kids. I know a lot of people who fear failure (even myself!), and let it defeat them and make them feel like they're worthless. More people need to teach their kids about failure the way you're doing; with that, kids wouldn't be scared of trying new things.
And thanks, Beaumont!
