As someone once said, "A promise made is a debt unpaid."
One simple way to set a good example for others, particularly children and other people who may not be as attentive as they should, is to wait at a crosswalk until all vehicle traffic has come to a complete stop and the signal light indicates you may cross the street. In cities you will even notice that most of the people standing near the crosswalks at intersections wait to cross the street until they see others doing so first. If you see someone crossing the street before the signal lights gives the go-ahead, and you hold your position, others may notice that you aren't starting to walk but are waiting for the signal light, and may remain where they are as well. Odds are you probably won't be ticketed for crossing the light against the signal if you start walking before it changes, but why take a chance, and why lead people to possible danger by starting across before the traffic has come to a complete stop and before the signal light says it's okay to do so?
