A Leaders Forum is for Group Founders, Group Administrators, and anyone who is thinking about starting a discussion group on the Daily Strength Website. Attrition is the normal and unavoidable loss of members from your group. Most likely, it has nothing to do with you or your group itself. Attrition most often occurs when people leave the website because they have other things competing for their time and energy.
When people do leave, we wish the best for them. For those who must depart due to unfortunate circumstances, we hope we have served them well and that their circumstances will improve soon.
What can you do about attrition in your group? First, don't take the loss of people personally. You put a lot of yourself into your group, so it's only natural that that you feel concern when a part of it seems to be diminished. Yes, people do leave, and most of them aren't coming back, but just know the loss is not caused by any failings on your part.
You'll want to attract and keep new people to counteract attrition. Type invitations in hugbooks, as personal messages, and as discussion topic postings in the many Daily Strength support groups and communities. Keep your invitations short to avoid tiring out your typing fingers, because you'll be sending out countless invites. Send at least twenty or so messages a day until you have succeeded in bringing your group back up to critical mass (this number varies for every group, and is the membership count at which activity begins to take place on a daily basis in a group). Be sure to include your group's link in invitations (and in all communications with your group's members, such as group messages). If one or two people join your group for every twenty invitations you send, consider yourself to be wildly successful. If no new members join your group as a result of sending out invitations, consider re-wording them and keep trying. Patience and persistence will bring you results.
Invite both new and existing members of the website. "It's about time somebody started a group on that topic!" "Hey, look, I just joined the website half an hour ago, and somebody has already asked me to join their group!"
On your group home page you will find the green letters "Invite a Friend." Use this feature to invite all of your Daily Strength friends to join your group, and do it once every month. You can also use this feature to send out email invites to people and organizations that aren't part of the Daily Strength Website.
When people join your group, you want to keep them there. Type 'thank you' notes in new members' hug books, as always being sure to include your group's link. Once in a while, send out group messages to remind people that your group is still around and to update them on recent goings on. When members visit your group home page, they should find discussion topics posted by yourself and others that they can participate in. It's your job to make it so.
