Before Jerry Seinfeld and Jerry Lewis, in a time prior to Sinbad and Carrot-Top, in an era that predated Lucille Ball, Jack Benny, and even Charlie Chaplin, when Laurel & Hardy and Abbott & Costello weren't even teamed up, he was the quintessential funny man. He was born in the town of Florida (not to be confused with the state by that name). He authored several of the classic adventure fantasy novels of the burgeoning United States. You could say he wove colorful yarns without a spinning wheel. Wit and sarcasm and exaggeration were his constant companions, yet wisdom was never far behind. You may know him by his words:

American humorist, lecturer, and writer whose works include "Tom Sawyer" (1876), "The Prince and the Pauper" (1882), "The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn" (1884), and "A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court" (1889). His novels were influenced by life on riverboats and in small towns on the Mississippi. Samuel Langhorne Clemens died in Redding, Connecticut, United States, on 21 April 1910, and was laid to rest at Woodlawn Cemetery in Elmira, New York.

Does anyone know what "mark twain" means?
To avoid grounding a riverboat (flatbottomed or otherwise) or damaging the hull, the crew would measure, or take the sounding of, the water depth. A pole or piece of rope with a stone on the end would be lowered into the water. Marks or knots on it would indicate a depth of six feet, twelve feet, eighteen feet, and so forth. A typical steam-power rotating-paddle-driven riverboat would need a minimum water depth of twelve feet to ensure safe passage. So when a crewmember cried out, "Mark twain," he would be indicating a safe or tolerable depth of water.
Nowdays, riverboats use electronic sounding equipment.
