Fun Fact: About one in ten people in the popuation have intense fears or phobias. Some common fears are of blood, hypodermic needles or syringes, dental drills, open wounds, medical instruments in general, hospitals or doctor's offices, and dental or medical procedures. Their reactions can range from alarm and stomach upset to severe anxiety attacks and fainting. The good news is that they are not crazy and their conditions can nearly always be treated successfully through gradual exposure to what makes them uncomfortable until they reach a point at which they have only a mild reaction or no reaction at all. Such guided desensitization therapy or conditioning can also be used to help people who have other fears and phobias, such as a fear of heights, dogs, speaking in front of groups, bodies of water, strangers, authority figures, driving automobiles, tests, spiders, snakes, darkness, making mistakes, and even a fear of cows.
