Hi,

I just joined this group and I'm here to introduce myself. I'm MissCricket, 25 years old, and I had a dad who was an abusive alcoholic.

While my dad has improved over the past few years, especially after my mom's passing, he ended up having a heart attack back in June. He has started to eat healthier and even gave up drinking but I still have scary nightmares where my dad gets drunk and starts to hit my family and I. It gets really scary and while my dad doesn't drink anymore, I may never know what would happen. He used to go lengths of time without drinking and then suddenly start again one day. My family's known for lying nor keeping promises.

My family lies to me, and I hate it.
I was sexually abused by a brother-in-law.

There is such a thing called ''a dry drunk ''. Meaning, they still have the urge to drink, not drink for a while, then go back to drinking again. And, they repeat this pattern over and over again, for the rest of their life. Don't dismiss the abuse you suffered because of your father. Being drunk is no excuse. You need to take care of yourself now. See a therapist, you are having these nightmares for a reason. I would not be around your dad. I know that feeling of being scared, and not knowing when this individual will strike again. It's also hard for us to wrap our head around the fact that the people who should be protecting us, are the ones who hurt us, on purpose. Abuse not done by a stranger, but by someone who is supposed to love us, and we are to trust...That's why you have to see a therapist. Before I got help, I was a mess. Besides distancing yourself from your father, also distance yourself from your family. They are toxic to you.

i still get nightmares well not lately but i did before about my mom and i fist fighting each other. i see a therapist some things improved while the stuff right now is still the same....
