We survived child abuse, but the pain still remains and so do the other effects which can last a lifetime. We are often unable to find adequate help, and we are seeking answers that can help us understand what happened so that we can go on to lead normal lives. Please help us develop an outline of the stages that a person goes through as someone who has experienced child abuse and/or neglect.
(What follows is an outline I have put together as the leader of this group. However, I have no professional training or experience, and just like many of you, I am to some extent wandering about in the dark.)
1. Abused And/Or Neglected. This is the stage in which the abuse or neglect occurs.
2. Lost. The abused individual does not fully realize what happened to him or her. Some abused individuals will remain in this state for life, while others who have early intervention, may never experience this phase.
3. Victim. The abused individual begins to understand what happened to him or her.
4. Survivor. Personal growth has begun to take place.
5. Thriver. The abused individual is able to function in a job, school, personal relationships, and life in general.
6. Life Beyond Abuse. The abuse that occurred in the past no longer has a tight grip on the individual.
Are there any missing phases? Can you more fully describe any of the phases listed above? Is this entire model unrealistic and useless? Do you have a better model or approach to getting better?

I had a plan if any step in my plan failed.
At some point a lot of recovering work must be done to reach a beyond stage.
Sadly abused can continue until the abuser dies. Despite "therapy" I went to (which was just more abuse), mom still was able to abuse me some more the last couple months of her life.
I will have to think about this some more.
