I often get about down here in australia on my surrey, disability scooter in other words as cant walk far due to an op that went horribly wrong. Now some shops are small everwhere, no mattter what country. But they fill them with so much it doesnt leave enough room for many of us who are forced to use these scooters. So I head in, move things when I have to anyway I have to to get where I want to go, and when they come running as a hanger of clothes gets pushed out of the way to a side area, I just look back at them, and explain this is sheer discrimination against all of us in this situation. Now I need to go over there, so would you please make it possible, and for me to get out again? I have noticed after a couple of my visits they change things, so time to head of for my next 'project'. But do still pop back now and then and look around and out. The stand of botttled chocolate covered nuts higher than my scooter at end of narrow isle was an honest mistake as it hit the floor. And they have never put another there. Just not enough room to go round. And some older people are to frightened to speak out for themselves.

One of the things that really bothers me about San Diego is that there are nice paved sidewalks in much of the city, but then the city goes and puts large metal boxes for the telephone company and utility poles right in the middle of the sidewalks, even where there is room to the left or to the right of the sidewalk for the boxes and utility poles. What are we supposed to do - step around them by walking out in the street? Imagine if they put these things in the middle of traffic lanes. I personally think this is one case in which the city, telephone companies, and utility companies should be dragged into court and sued repeatedly for blocking access to public rights-of-way, namely, sidewalks. I don't have expertise in this area, but I think that attorneys and law firms could probably generate a lot of revenue for themselves by finding disabled people who aren't able to use the blocked sidewalks. This is just so wrong, wrong, wrong.

someone (maybe you beaumont) needs to go to council meetings n speak up for the physicaly challenged people. you could get people together to go to meetings with you about it. start petitions. or get trucks n hook chains to those boxes n yank em outa there!

Sometimes I've actually imagined myself getting a cardboard template of a disability symbol (like the ones you see on the pavement in handicapped parking spaces) and then cut out the letters to spell 'DISABILITY BARRIER' on it below the symbol, then sneaking around town taping the template onto the utility boxes that are in the middle of sidewalks and going over the template with a can of spray paint, then removing the template to leave the message in place for all to see - I'd be The Disability Rights Tagger...but then, I'd never do that...or would I? Most likely not, but the idea is interesting. Sorry, just had to rant!
