NYC's most popular dater offers tips to make over your online dating photos

Lauren Urasek is not only a celebrity makeup artist and author of the upcoming book Popular: The Ups and Downs of Online Dating from the Most Popular Girl in New York City, but she was also dubbed NYC's most popular online dater by New York Magazine for being the most-messaged woman on OkCupid. No small feat for an online dater.Urasek is now the resident dating expert for The Grade dating app, and has offered to put both her makeup and online dating skills to good use by sharing a few tips about how to optimize your photos. (The pairing of Urasek with The Grade makes good sense - it's the first dating app to allow users to see real-time data of how their profile picture performs compared to their other photos, as well as how it compares to the average user. No pressure.) Here's what she had to say...Kelly Seal: What would you say the #1 mistake people make when posting photos to their online profile?Lauren Urasek: I don't know if there is one specific thing people do wrong, but it's either using group photos, outdated photos, or just photos that don't give an accurate representation of who they are.KS: What type of photo gets the most attention for http://moremuslimthanobama.com/searching-for-erotic-courting-web-sites/ - http://moremuslimthanobama.com/searching-for-erotic-courting-web-sites/ - women? For men?LU: I think it depends on the person for sure but a good guess for http://www.nbsplit.com/canada-relationship-absolutely-free-web-site-for-the-absolutely-free-driving-us-residents/ - http://www.nbsplit.com/canada-relationship-absolutely-free-web-site-for-the-absolutely-free-driving-us-residents/ - men would be a picture with a dog in it! And for women, probably a full body photo that also shows their face well.KS: What are some tips that people who aren't so photogenic can do to help their photos look stellar and inviting?LU: Get a professional photographer to take head shots of you. If you can't do that, try to take some pictures in natural light (outdoors) and get a variety of different photos from different angles. That way, you're bound to find an angle that works for you.KS: What did you notice that helped you get more positive feedback from your online photos - did you test out certain photos? Did you change them often? Did some types work better than others?LU: I definitely realized some pictures got more of a positive response than others. When I was originally on OkCupid, I'd probably change my profile picture every couple weeks or so because I always wanted to have the most current photo up. Also, it's been shown that if the same people on the dating app see your picture again and again, (even if they've never messaged you), they're likely to just skip by you. However, if you change your picture often, you're more likely to get a better response because people think it's a new person at first glance. For me, selfies in natural lighting with my shoulders up always got the best response. If I posted a far away shot of me doing something, it didn't get a good response. Now with the dating app The Grade, you don't have to guess what photo gets the best response and it makes it that much easier.KS: Any other photo tips you can share?LU: I can't stress lighting enough. When you're taking a picture the light should ALWAYS be in front of you. Once you have your pictures, make sure you post at least four and make sure they show variety!
