Merced playground damaged by fires

A north Merced public playground combusted Wednesday, leaving it unusable, in accordance with city officials.
Early Thursday the climbing area attached to some slide, bars and other play structures revealed signs of charring, melted plastic and burnt bark.
Merced City Fire Department responded to the play place, which is just east of Rudolph Rivera Middle School near Santa Barbara - do playground - Court, three different times on Wednesday, based on Battalion Chief Billy Alcorn.
During the first call, crews discovered no indications of a fire. The crew put the fire out with water that was minimal, Alcorn said. During a later call, the gear still smoldering was simply found by crews.
It to speculate if the fire was an arson, Alcorn said, but investigators have begun to look into it. It undoubtedly is a suspicious fire, he said.
Public Works crews have enveloped the structure in caution tape to warn children to stay away, officials said. Some of the joints holding up the scaling stages melted away, yellow posts are black from char and a toy clock at the constructions base was warped by fire.
Merced city spokesman Mike Conway said firefighters responded to an identical construction on May 14.
Conway said it to know the extent of damage to the play equipment, but noticed that structures can be pricy.
