Meet the new 2015 ARIA Awards stars

Australian singer-songwriter Courtney Barnett has been nominated for eight ARIA awards, but success hasn't tainted her humility. CONRAD Sewell was worried he had been coerced into attending the 2015 ARIA Awards nominations announcement to make up the numbers.The Brisbane pop artist found it tough to believe that he would be in the running for any of the music industry gongs considering he only released his debut single Hold Me Up in March.But there was no doubting Sewells arrival as a bona fide star-in-the-making when his second single Start Again originally intended for Kylie Minogue who chose not to record it soared to No. 1 on the charts.Rising star ... Picture: John Feder.Racing it up the top 50 was Firestone, a song he wrote and then finished with Norwegian DJ Kygo.The 27-year-old artist shouldnt have been concerned about being wallpaper at the event. He scored three nominations including Breakthrough Artist, Best Pop Release and Song Of the Year, making history with the latter nod.He will contest the publicly-voted award with his sister Grace, who was nominated for her chart-topping version of the Lesley Gore classic.Other StoriesAnd then there are the other artists up for Song Of the Year including Iggy Azalea, Jarryd James, Marlisa, Nathaniel, Peking Duk, Sia, The Veronicas and Vance Joy.He already has one up on his sister, having been tapped to perform at the awards on November 26.I think we will both be beaten by someone else. Young bedroom songwriter auditions for Australian Idol and doesnt even get past that first stage. He forms a rock band Sons Of Midnight and they get signed to a deal in Europe. Band move to Europe but it all falls apart.The Australian songwriter decided to keep trying, first in London and then in Los Angeles, constantly writing songs and couch surfing.Finally he lands a deal with new independent American label 300 entertainment, founded by US music legend Lyor Cohen.It feels like I have been doing it forever but this year is the year when all the stars finally aligned.
