Afghan Con Man Rips Off Possible Ransom For Bowe Bergdahl | Cw39 Newsfix

Bowe Bergdahl? In May, the Afghan terror group called Haqqani released Bergdahl in exchange for several terrorists held by the US at Guantanamo bay. Now, it appears this was not the way it was supposed to go down. Republican congressman Duncan Hunter is trying to find out if the US tried to pay a ransom to Haqqani in January or February, but that we got ripped off instead. In June, Hunter wrote a letter asking the Pentagon, Central Intelligence, and the FBI to explain. It is my understanding, he wrote, that a transfer occurred that possibly included payment to Haqqani from the Taliban for the receipt of Bergdahl. Then, earlier this month, Hunter wrote to Secretary of Defense Chuck Hagel, asking him to confirm payment to an afghan intermediary who disappeared with the money and failed to facilitate Bergdahls release in return. The policy of the US government is not to pay ransom for the release of military personnel or civilians. And thats probably why the military brass is telling hunter that the money was not ransom, but payment for information about where Delta Force commandos could find Bergdahl. Theres no word on how much the Afghan con man stole, but reports say Bergdahls family was ready to pay $10 million for his release before the White House put a stop to it.
