I wish they would have put some work into their privacy issues since the hugs are public and so are profiles.. so.. instead of adding more of them they should have added security to keep them private. .. that whole issue is really bugging me.. cause some people think that this is their safe haven.

i was thinking the ssme thing, i googled my ds name and my profile came up. i couldn't believe it!!! I'm definately going to be more careful with what i post. Is there anything we can do to change it so it's more private?

I don't know if we need everything to be private. Isn't that what messages are for? I can understand wanting to keep some medical and family pics private to your choice. What kind of board would DS be if everything was private or just friends........ One can just MSN or something if they don't want anyone to see what they are doing. I just don't put private things on my hugs I wouldn't want all to see.

As far as the google thing they can only see what you keep open. What are the odds of someone guessing your handle and typing it in looking for you. Your not to on the ball if you are posting personal info like name, ph, address, e-mails anywhere on the net. Your messages are personal to only you. Not even your friends can read your messages. I just stick with that for private. Even in messages be care I have ask a few I don't like my real name being used in posts or hugs but they do it anyway. So I just don't give out private info I don't want seen. Unless you meet someone or plan on meeting in person I don't see the relavence of having to have the whole community know it. That is what handles are for. I have only given my personal name to 2 people on DS. That is just my thouhgts on it. I just got tired of being parinoid and over reacting from the first google awarness so just take care myself what I post instead of bothering DS. I would rather see things like managing your messsages better to save them so you don't have to paste and copy if you want to keep them and putting your friends in sections of who you stay in contact more with or their medical issues order.

i don't like the idea of someone googling my name and being able to see my profile, I also saw some of my responses to post in the codependency group when i googled my ds name. i think it might have been nice if someone had let us know up front that people can read information on ds without being a member or needing a paasword. i am one of the people who thought of DS as my safe place.

I would have liked to have known when I was creating my profile that it would be visable to the world. I realize that messages are private.. but your Member groups are NOT. I did read the privacy policy:

It says things posted to main boards etc.. have public access.. I guess that is why there are so many trolls there.

It does not say however that whatever you post in your member groups was open to an internet search.

Am I missing something? I'm sorry to belabour this.. It sounds like you guys have been down this route before. I have just discovered this. If there is a link to previous discussions that I could read instead of asking what people think here.. could you put of a post with the link.

Thanks for bringing this to our attention. I was mortified to discover that the struggles in some areas of my life that I had put on my profile at their request was available for the world to see. I have now deleted a lot of stuff, even my journal entries, and left just the basic info. When I first joined DS I was a bit naive, but not any more.
