Yes, your daughter does need counseling. It is good that you recognize that. You probably feel like you are losing your mind because ... as a parent, we want to take pain away from our children. In this case, you cannot. When I was 18, my best friend died in an auto accident. I know how your daughter feels. It's a tender age to lose someone. To this day, I have trouble trusting or getting too close to people, because "they leave" and it hurts. Hugs to you.

You're not a failure as a parent or anything else you are traveling in uncharted waters. It's very hard to know what to do and which way to turn. We're not equiped to deal with these problems alone. Counseling is a good choice, it helped me along with medication, family and friends. Special days and the upcoming holidays can be very tough to get through. Get whatever help you need and remember you're not alone.

My support group addressed this issue last week. Although my children are grown, I think the advice is good for all who have lost a parent. Some of the information was that children will revisit grief, acknowledge your child's grief, use age appropriate language, lovingly address defiant behavior, watch for suicidal tendencies, and be prepared to help a suicidal child. Also so many times we are wrapped up in our grief instead of saying "Hey I'm still alive and I have children who need me." That is the way that I feel most of the time, I am in such unbearable pain that I can't focus on anyone else. This week I am trying to draw strength from my family and share my grief rather than hide it. I do hope that this helps a little, take care of yourself and know that you aren't alone in this.
