Today I was going to do something for myself and get out of the house. After an early morning appointment I came home, had my morning coffee, skimmed the paper and went to my hair appointment. The same woman has been doing my hair for 12 years now. I needed it cut and asked for her to put honey streaks in it to break up the monotony. I do this once, maybe twice a year just for a change. She knows my usual cut so no big deal-I sit down and she goes to work, first with the color and then with the cut. I was not paying much attention and my glasses were sitting on the counter. As she’s blow drying my hair I start to notice (even w/o my glasses) that the streaks are a bit wider and more pronounced than usual. I put my glasses back on and oh crap I look like a dam tiger! Then she gives me the mirror to look at the back of my head. Hardly any streaks there but she cut the back the shortest I’ve ever had it in my life! She says, “no I always cut it like this”. So what can I do? Absolutely nothing! It’s hair, it will grow back. So maybe I look good as a tiger? Not so much -but after I do my roots in another few weeks I can get rid of it.
So, I decide let’s go for a mani/pedi today . Maybe having my nails done will make me feel better. Leave hair salon, drive to nail salon. Walk in, tell them what I want and they tell me chair 8 in the back for the pedicure first. I’m walking down to the back and all of a sudden a sense of panic arises in me. OMG, Ellen, when was the last time you shaved your legs? Maybe 2 weeks ago! There was no way in you know where I was going to sit in that chair and roll up these jeans to these prickly legs. I quickly turned around and told them actually I didn’t have the time and could I just get the manicure only? So it was a little white lie, because I have all the time in the world, but an epic save on my part. This I can only attribute to widow's brain. Why didn’t I think of that? It’s still winter and we shave our legs in the winter usually for one thing only. Right, ladies? No need for leg shaving lately! Thank goodness Spring is on the way and it will be a routine again. So the lady starts my manicure and immediately clips two nails pretty short. Then she says “ you like short?”. Well it’s too late now honey, and no , I no like short”. I don’t wear them that long but at least a little over the tips of my fingers! Oh well, ain’t no back scratching going on anymore, either.
So here I am 4 1/2 hours later with an ugly hairdo, short nails and still unshaven legs! I’ll take care of that tonight- just sat down and felt a little light headed. Again the dam widows brain- nothing at all today but that one cup of coffee. I guess I’ll make a sandwich....
Looking in the mirror at the hair-maybe I’ll start a trend. If you don’t laugh, you cry.
Hope your day was more successful than mine!
I have been thinking of what I want to do with my life. I have tried to think outside of the box such as work as a paid volunteer for an NGO and give back in any way I can while having an adventure. I could go somewhere like South America or Africa where I have never been before. Or maybe I could get a better, full time, job that is more fullfilling. Maybe I could get a for fun job that I really...
11:10 is a weird time for a doctor's appointment. I am already starved! Perhaps with that in mind, I can get through this. I am also going to Walmart and a couple grocery stores, I think. I am still trying to find a ray of hope out there for some happiness. If I keep fussing about living alone, is someone going to want to put me in assisted living? That is a morbid thought, for...
