My father is a Vietnam Vet who served in the support of US Goverment as a Special Guerrilla Units in the US Secret Army in Laos in 1964-1975. He is diagnosed with Type 2 Diabetes and I believed that he have been exposed to Agent Orange during the Vietnam War. Sadly, I just found out about the Agent Orange and tomorrow I'll have to bring my father to the County to apply for VA Benefits. I'm pretty sure he'll be eligible for VA Compensation and free medical treatment.
My other concern about my father's health is that I'm afraid he might also be exposed to Acoustic Trauma. Sometimes he hears buzzing or ringing tones in his ears. Also, he might be suffering from PTSD. I know for sure that my father is easily startled & frightened.

I'm trying to exercise daily. I was doing fairly well until I sprained my ankle 2 weeks ago but now I'm getting back on the horse. Today I walked over a mile with my arm weights that are about 22lbs total. I was out of shape and it was hard on my arms. I also did my 30 situps. I'm also going to drink a lot of water and try to eat healthy. I do tend to have a sweet tooth but I'm cutting...
Your initial visit with VA might seem a bit frustrating, but hang in there. They will tell you what you need to bring in the way of proof of service, DD-214, and things like that.
There might be a waiting list.
If your father was in a combat unit, he might be entitled to extra combat compensation. Check out the website and if you have other concerns, contact your local VFW. VA Hospitals have a patients advocate that can help you if you run into a snag.
Your first step is to try to get him assigned a primary care physician.
Good luck, and God bless your father for his service to our country!!!
My husband is also a vietnam vet.
Best wishes for you and father*
I don't understand why so many are having problems getting VA assistance. I was in Viet Nam in 1969. I got out of the Army in 1975. I did not ask for VA medical assistance until 2004 when I had a problem with my hands and had no medical insurance.
I went to the VA Hospital with my DD214 and was treated that day, even though it was not service related. Over the next 6 months I received extensive treatment and there were people there to help me file for and get a non-service related disability pension. Still today get all my medical at the VA other than Eye and Dental.
It isn't that hard and there is alot of help there with the paperwork. Just go in and ask (not demand) treatment and they will help you.
Good luck
If you don't have all the information in hand then have your father contact the VA to get his military records and military medical records cause he'll need those to file a claim. If he is seeing a doctor currently he will need all that information also.
If you need help getting this information ask DAV for their help, they will help you get that information from the military.
We all had to do this in order to get a VA rating for service connection. It took me about nine months when I started filing for service connected disability to get my rating from the VA.
When I went to get my service connected I went through DAV they were great in helping.
I too have type II Diabetes from exposer to Agent Orange, I also have M. D. in my left eye. I'm losing my vision and have a dark spot in the center of that eye. This is caused by type II diabetes.
