Just wanted to get the word out there about surgery for extreme TMJ. My daughter\'s onset of TMJ was extremely rapid & severe at age 17 - within 2 months it progressed from clicking to a totally locked jaw. I\'ve had TMJ for 35 years, and didn\'t realize it could progress so fast. She could only eat soft foods and couldn\'t open her mouth more than a few cm. She was unsuccessfully treated with physical therapy & appliances. Her dentist referred her to a specialist in TMJ & facial pain. He worked with her, but after sending her for MRI movies, concluded that the disk was slipped & compressed in the joint. He recommended a surgeon at Staten Island (NY) Hospital, Dr. David Hoffman. Note: Dr. Hoffman was featured in a Discovery Health show for other extreme facial surgeries - he does wonderful work with other doctors in third world countries. In my daughter\'s case, he was able to surgically repair the disk arthroscopically by sewing the disk to the cartilege in the ear (sounds strange, but has worked for the most part). He then injected botox into the joint after the surgery to relax the joint so my daughter could do her PT afterwards with a special machine. She healed fairly well and did ok for a few months, but then required a 2nd surgery (and more Botox) to remove some scar tissue when the joint locked up again 5 months later. That was 3 years ago and she has to be careful since the joint is permanently compromised, but at least she can chew (no gum or bagels) and eat normally. Dr. Hoffman is a miracle-worker!
