If anyone was "lucky" enough to have this op please enlighten me and tell me if you still have numbness in your neck and chest. I had a modifies bilateral neck disseciton along with a total thyroidectomy (fun huh!) in april 07, and to this day I have almost no feeling in my neck or chest, and very limited feeling in the left shoulder due to them having to sever a muscle. I just want to know since nerve damage does not generally improve if this will too be permanant sice a majority of it is nerve damage. Thanks for anyone who can relate to this.

I had about the same surgery, it sounds like, and I had numbness in most of my neck for 8 months. It came back. It was not nerve damage, just swelling. I also had another surgery of my chest and my laryngeal nerve has a lot of problems, basically sometimes I have a voice, sometimes I don't. They keep telling me it will come back eventually - no nerve damage, just swelling they say again.

I had a total thyroidectomy and a tumor removed from the top of my larynx in May, 2006. My whole neck and even my chin was numb for about a year, but eventually the feeling came back. Mine stayed numb so long that when the feeling came back, it felt unnatural. I also have the voice problem. Most of the time my voice is real raspy, but I am alive and have a voice. I could have lost my voice completely because of the location of my tumor. Just give it time and I think most of the numbness will go away. They also told me that my numbness was from nerve damage, but said the nerves would repair themselves and they did.

I'm trying to exercise daily. I was doing fairly well until I sprained my ankle 2 weeks ago but now I'm getting back on the horse. Today I walked over a mile with my arm weights that are about 22lbs total. I was out of shape and it was hard on my arms. I also did my 30 situps. I'm also going to drink a lot of water and try to eat healthy. I do tend to have a sweet tooth but I'm cutting...
