Hello all. 1.5 yrs ago a nodule was found (during routine visit) on the right thyroid side. At that point in time, it was found to be 3.7 cm in size, which from what I understand is considerably large. During 6 mos follow up U/S's it has incresed from 3.7, to 3.9 to 4.1 in size, however in the grand scheme of things was probably the same size it's always been depending on what angle the U/S tech went in at, and how hard he pressed, etc.
Had a iodine uptake, and FNA biopsy. It was determined I had a cold-non functioning colloid nodule what was malignent.
Surgeon finally suggested removal because the bigger it gets, the more riskier the surgery can be in the way of damage to the vocal cords, etc., and that it more than likely will have to come out anyways.
I just had the surgery on Thursday, and was home Friday. The surgery itself went very well, and I was up and walking aobut 3hrs after surgery.
I'm a little confused becuase my surgeon told me that he would remove the right portion, and test that for cancer during the surgery, and then from that determine if they needed to remove the entire thing, or if just the right was ok. He only took the right lobe out but when he explained it to me after the surgery, he said something alone the lines of, we just took the right side, that it was A________(I really should have wrote the word down), but that he would know the true results in a few days from the findings of sending it out. I was still groggy, tired, and hate hospitals to begin with so I didn't really ask more about it.
Now that I am at home, and I'm feeling a little normal, I am back to my suspecting worry-some self wondering if there was anything in there that was suspicious. I will go back in 2 weeks for the follow up.
I really like trying to talk to others that have experienced similiar, so just doing a little intro w/my story.

I'm trying to exercise daily. I was doing fairly well until I sprained my ankle 2 weeks ago but now I'm getting back on the horse. Today I walked over a mile with my arm weights that are about 22lbs total. I was out of shape and it was hard on my arms. I also did my 30 situps. I'm also going to drink a lot of water and try to eat healthy. I do tend to have a sweet tooth but I'm cutting...
biopsy they did during surgery said the tumor was benign. They said the final results would be back in a couple weeks. When those results came back, they indicated it was malignant. So, I had to go back and have the other half of my thyroid removed. That took a lot out of me. After the first surgery I felt pretty good right away, but after the second one, it took me longer to recover. I hope things work out differently for you. Just focus on it's one of the most cureable cancers to have. My Dr. said if your going to get cancer this is the "best" one to have.
Take care.
i have two nodules, one in each lobe and have a preliminary date set for a complete thyroidectomy in three weeks time. one of mine is hot, the other is cold and that one grew from 2.7cm to 3.1 in 6 weeks and from 3.1 to 3.9 in the next 6 weeks. it is pretty scary stuff i agree, but i guess thats why they're the whole thing. anyway, regarding the a............. word you couldnt remember, do you think it may have been adenoma? this just means lump from what i've read and most adenomas are benign. they normall show up as hot and are often quite vascular allowing the thyroid to continue to function. i'm no medic, but thats what i understand anyway. hope it's helped a bit and hope too that your recovery is swift and you soon get back to good health. you just gotta stay positive and keep smiling:)
