Stroke Support Group
A stroke is an acute neurologic injury where the blood supply to a part of the brain is interrupted, either by a clot in the artery or if the artery bursts. The brain perfused by that artery no longer receiving oxygen carried by the blood and dying with cessation of function from that part of the brain.

My husband had an Ischemic Stroke on Oct 27, 3 days after he had a TIA. His Dr will be getting back to us next week as to the results of the heart halter he wore for 24 hrs. He said before he could decide on treatment he needed to know what exactly caused the 100% occlusion of his left carotid artery and right vertebral (words I did not know a month ago) There is the possibility of either a stent, or coumadin in his future.
His speech and comprehension have been greatly affected. We have been working on learning to count, ABC's, reading, writing, talking on the phone, and word association.(name with object)
He has been diagnosed as having Wernicke's Aphasia.
He is determined to overcome, and learns to say and read new words every day. It was cute the day he learned what arms, and legs are. He is a cautious optimist, and has always had a compassionate personality, and a great sense of humor. He has great strength because of this, which helps to put me somewhat at ease as well.
He does not drive, but does have a wanna-be- Vesper that he can ride to the store to fetch milk and eggs. He helps with the laundry, and house work as well. He has made it a point to continue going to men's Bible study one night a week, not so much for him (he has no clue what they are saying due to the Aphasia) but for me so that I can have a couple of hours to myself.
We are hopeful that in time he will make a full recovery.
That is my story in a nutshell
Is there anyone else who can relate, and/or give me an idea as to how long it will take for him to "get my talk back" as he puts it?

I did not have Wernickes Aphasia, but I was left with the inability to produce speech, and the inability with word searching...I'm sorry to say but it is going to take a long time for him to ge this speech back. But, as you said he has got alot of spirit...Never underestimate !

One more fact that you haven't considered...we (the majority) that are on this site have had major strokes ourselves, and we too have survived. And we are compassionate people!

I'm trying to exercise daily. I was doing fairly well until I sprained my ankle 2 weeks ago but now I'm getting back on the horse. Today I walked over a mile with my arm weights that are about 22lbs total. I was out of shape and it was hard on my arms. I also did my 30 situps. I'm also going to drink a lot of water and try to eat healthy. I do tend to have a sweet tooth but I'm cutting...
