has anyone had IT band syndrome? I love to run, but can't because of the strained IT band. Any advice?

I had IT band syndrome. Had a wonderful osteopath at the time who recommended hard-form orthotics to reduce pronation. Worked like a charm. Also lots of directed stretching after running has helped tremendously. Try putting your leg up on a table (picnic tables worked for me) with the side of your knee flat on the table, your heel pulled in toward your pelvis. Lean down into the knee. It helps.

Stretching and strengthening exercises are the best thing. You might ask your doctor to send you to physical therapy for IT band stretching (they can give you specific exercises to do at home also) and maybe some ultrasound treatments.
