Spina bifida describes birth defects caused by an incomplete closure of one or more vertebral arches of the spine, resulting in malformations of the spinal cord. The spinal membranes and spinal cord may protrude through the absence of vertebral arches (called clefts).

Hi my name is Julie and I am 21. I just recently found out I have spina bifida occulta at s2. I'm not sure what a lot of this means... I was in a car accident in Sept and I requested my med. records from the accident. It was on my records that I had it, but I'd never been told. I miscarried my first child in April, am I'm scared this could have to do with it. I've always had really bad back pain and constant UTI's. I've had bowel problems. I have talked to my dr's about this and no one here (I live in a smallllll town!) knows hardly anything about it. My PCP said "No.. I don't think its genetic so dont' worry about it affecting them" but I'm beleiving differently? Any advice??

I'm trying to exercise daily. I was doing fairly well until I sprained my ankle 2 weeks ago but now I'm getting back on the horse. Today I walked over a mile with my arm weights that are about 22lbs total. I was out of shape and it was hard on my arms. I also did my 30 situps. I'm also going to drink a lot of water and try to eat healthy. I do tend to have a sweet tooth but I'm cutting...
There is no known cause of Spina Bifida but I've read research that some forms of Spina Bifida is hereditary, some is environmental, some is from abuse, some is from lack of folic acid. I have Myelomengecele (sp?) and during my oldest sisters third pregnancy she had an x-ray and they found Occulta.
Basically what I'm saying is dont give up hope! I'm sorry you lost a baby (my mom had 8 children - one died after birth) and then she had 6 miscarriages. Of those children 2 of us have Spina Bifida and one was born and died of heart problems and then one was born premie so she developed Cerebral Palsy. Yes it can be genetic, but there are many things that can go wrong with a pregnancy - my point is don't give up. If you want a baby have one or adopt. Try and stay positive - Spina Bifida is scary but your future child has wonderful possibilities to look forward to. Hugs CathyM
Take care
