Spina Bifida Support Group
Spina bifida describes birth defects caused by an incomplete closure of one or more vertebral arches of the spine, resulting in malformations of the spinal cord. The spinal membranes and spinal cord may protrude through the absence of vertebral arches (called clefts).

Hello to all. I am sorry if I am intruding. I myself do have a son with special needs. He has Down syndrome. I know from my own experience how helpful these boards can be.
I am actually posting because I have a friend who is 19 weeks pregnant and just received the diagnosis of spinal Bifida for her unborn daughter. This is her third pregnancy and her second child was miscarried midway threw her pregnancy and was also diagnosed with spinal bifida. She is really not sure what do to at this point. I don't know what I can do or say to help her. She is unsure of whether or not to terminate. She is really worried about quality of life. I don't know if there is anyone out there who would share there story and allow me to share some hope with her. She is very depressed right now. Any help would be appreciated.
Thank you in advance.

I'm trying to exercise daily. I was doing fairly well until I sprained my ankle 2 weeks ago but now I'm getting back on the horse. Today I walked over a mile with my arm weights that are about 22lbs total. I was out of shape and it was hard on my arms. I also did my 30 situps. I'm also going to drink a lot of water and try to eat healthy. I do tend to have a sweet tooth but I'm cutting...
I have Myeleomengecele (Sp?), hydrocephilus, and a man made bladder/bowel. I graduated from community college with a cert. in Accounting and a Gen. Bus. Degree. I work for The Arc in my area and I love my job, they totally accomodate for my health issues and my wheelchair. I walked up until I was 33 when I developed Fibromyalgia. So now I'm in a wheelchair but I live a full life. I was in a relationship for 15 years until his disability and mine got to difficult for him to deal with so he left me. I have a sister with Occulta/MS but she does well. My only problems I have really have been bladder/bowel and not being able to have kids but many with Spina Bifida can have kids so tell your friend to hang in there! Go talk to The Arc in your area and find The Spina Bifida Organization in your area. Also look up The Opportunity Councel they can help allot.
Keep your spirits up both you mom's. You have a loving child to enjoy; don't let a disability get in the way of enjoying that life that has been given to you to love and care for. You can do anything you put your mind to so fight to be happy and to make your children happy. You will be glad you did!
