Nicotine is typically eliminated from the body within 2 to 3 days, however, physical and psychological withdrawal symptoms may last for much longer depending on the individual. If you are trying to kick the habit, this community is dedicated to giving smokers the...

I'm 45 and I've smoked since I was 13. I tried it the first time because I thought it was cool, it was something grownups and famous people did, and because my dad was such an asshole about cigarettes. I liked the idea of being addicted. It sounded glamorous and I had no clue of what life-or-death hooked really meant.
By the time I was 19, I was up to 4 packs a day. Lucky Strikes. Non Filter. I tried to quit smoking the first time when I was 20 and I made it about 3 days.
In my life, I've ended relationships, quit jobs, moved, forfeited promotions, and spent thousands of dollars in order to smoke.
This year, I've quit twice; for 90 days and now for another 30 days.
I have lung disease, asthma, gum disease, varicose veins, poor circulation, yellowing nails, thin skin, wrinkles and I've already lost one tooth -- and my doctors tell me that this is all due directly to smoking.
I'm still having a tough time. it's a minute to minute thing sometimes making myself not smoke. However, I know that if I wait until next year to quit, it will be even tougher.
I'm writing this, praying I'll reach somebody who might be headed down the same path but has just an ounce more self-respect than I did when I started to smoke. I sound old -- even to me. And that sucks, because I am not so sure that old words can reach young ears. I just so very desperately want to save at least one life from the clutch of this addiction. For whomever is reading this, I hope that life is yours.

Thank you for sharing your life story with cigarettes. I wish you the best in your quit. I took Chantix - started on June 6 and had my last cigarette on June 12 so 4 mos. now. I think Chantix is a wonder drug. Throughout the entire time I took and & for the past 6 wks. since I've been off, I have had no desire at all to smoke. I hope you get the help you need to be successful. I am still short of breath and wonder if this is the way it will be for me forever. I'm sure I did some unreverseible harm to my lungs.

I am thankful to read your discussion. I too started at a young age, 12, and am 41 now. I tried patches, gum, and welbutrin. Tomorrow I have a doctors appt. for chantix. I am very scared to quit. I hope this works cause next year I want to run the midnight sun run in Fairbanks on June 21. my prayers are with you guypaul.

I'm trying to exercise daily. I was doing fairly well until I sprained my ankle 2 weeks ago but now I'm getting back on the horse. Today I walked over a mile with my arm weights that are about 22lbs total. I was out of shape and it was hard on my arms. I also did my 30 situps. I'm also going to drink a lot of water and try to eat healthy. I do tend to have a sweet tooth but I'm cutting...
