Sleep apnea is a common sleep disorder characterized by brief interruptions of breathing during sleep. People with sleep apnea partially awaken as they struggle to breathe, but in the morning they may not be aware of sleep disturbances.

I know so many of my sleep apnea patients are dying for something better than CPAP.
A study published in 2006 compared oral appliances to placebo (nothing essentially) and it was better...yet when compared to CPAP (continuous positive-airway pressure) it was not better...CPAP remains the best though its hard to tolerate...anyone out there using CPAP?

Today is my 25th birthday, to my somewhat lack of surprise I can see already no one really seems to care. I've always been the kinda person to make sure that everyone I Care about feels appreciated and knew somebody had their back. I can count 4 times this year when I Went out of my way to make sure a "friend" felt good on their birthday, especially if they got left hanging. Its early in the...
I have a full mask appliance. It is so obtrusive and uncomfortable. I am very conscious of it on my face and I have to take Ambien to fall asleep.
I managed to make it through 4-5 hours last night with it and when I woke up I had to take the mask off and my throat was dry and it was hard to swallow.
Can\'t stand it. :(
However, my snoring is terrible and the other methods that were previously helping stopped for some reason. I need to stick with this until I figure out something else for the snoring at least... Sigh.
I must say...I hate it too. But...I won\'t give up.
I\'ve heard many stories about how much it has helped people...so, don\'t give up on it. I\'ve only had mine for about a month...I must admit, I don\'t use it every night yet, nor have I been able to sleep with it through the night, but some day I will. I think it\'s important to stay in contact with the dr who diagnosed you, they might have some advice. Good luck!

I started with nasal pillow until my pressure was increased to 16 and then to 18.Then it was a nasal mask which when I slept I would breath through my mouth so it didn't work so they gave me a chin strap to wear with nasal mask,I had straps all over my head but I stuck with it,pretty soon the straps were anoying,so now I am on a full mask, and been using it for about 2 wks now.I wish there was other options.I will make a follow-up with Doc,it's just not working like It should.
I've been using a Cpap for about 4 years. I got used to it after awhile, but sleeping has become just another bodily function... not much pleasure to it. But Cpap definitely has alleviated one symptom of apnea that I hated, which was waking up feeling drugged. I think it's called apoxia (?) which is when your brain is deprived of oxygen. Help me on this one, Dr. O. Anyway, last year I switched froman over the nose mask to a "Breeze" air-pillow mask, and it has made a big difference. This mask has a flat, curved metal spine that huges your head from back to front. It's held in place by two small side straps that only go about as low on your head as a hat would. At the front end of the metal spine, there's a small nose piece that suspends under the front of the nose with two small flexible, soft "pillows" that blow air into the nostrils. I was told by my sleep doctor that the a lot of people don't like it, but I like it SO much better than any headgear I've used so far. First off, I sleep on my side, and this mask leaves the sides of my face free so I can rest my face on my pillow. If I put my face in the center of the pillow, the air escape valve blows air aginst the pillow which deflects into my face a bit, so I position my face at the edge of the pillow with just my nose area hanging off. The mask rarely moves out of position until I turn over, and even then it stays pretty well in place. I can even sleep on my stomach as long as my face stays to the side. With the old mask, I was constantly readjusting it and have on more than one occasion, pulled it off and thrown it across the room. I would suggest trying the Breeze mask.
