Herpes zoster, colloquially known as shingles, is the reactivation of varicella zoster virus, leading to a crop of painful blisters over the area of a dermatome. It occurs very rarely in children and adults, but its incidence is high in the elderly (over 60), as well as in any age group of immunocompromised patients.

I had an MI on May 11 2007. One week after arriving home I noticed two fingers on my right hand had small itchy yet painful blisters on them. Thinking I may have somehow burned my fingers I got a needle and proceeded to pop them to drain the fluid but instead it hurt like hell and bled a little . I went to the doctor the next day and was diagnosed with herpetic whitlow . Confused and thnking it may have come from doing some gardening the doctor said it was from a thorn of some kind while gardening yet its common for nurses to get this due to occasionally being poked by needles. I was given meds to aleviate the problem but it came back a few days after completing the prescription ,I was then given another dose and ACYCLOVIR to keep it away ...suddenly I developed SHINGLES in the last week (facial only ) I have been given FAMCICLOVIR . How could I be taking the main shingles defence medication for months and still end up with shingles ? This really worries me and is very painful itchy and ugly . Any advice on what works and what doesn't would be very helpful Thanks for listening . I'm taking Centrum multi vitamins , Lysine , occasional probiotic and as much Vitamin C as I can handle to combat this and boost my immune system .If you have any recipes for topical cream it would also help . Once again thanks for listening .

I'm trying to exercise daily. I was doing fairly well until I sprained my ankle 2 weeks ago but now I'm getting back on the horse. Today I walked over a mile with my arm weights that are about 22lbs total. I was out of shape and it was hard on my arms. I also did my 30 situps. I'm also going to drink a lot of water and try to eat healthy. I do tend to have a sweet tooth but I'm cutting...
I sincerely think that for each person almost on this site that they have been prescribed something different for their Shingles problem.
My problem was not on my face but on my stomach, side and back - so I don't know if there are some medications especially for the face and others for other areas of the body.
My doctor prescribed Acyclovir 200 mg for me and it helped clear me up but it was almost a month before that happened and I thought it would never work soon enough. But I was extremely lucky to have had my doctor catch mine in time so that I am not still stuffering. Good luck, and hopefully someone else here can help you with your problem.
