I guess I am pretty high functioning. Cutting, for me, is just routine. I usually self injure three or four times a week. Its like washing my hair or doing laundry. Its about getting though and staying grounded. Its about not disconnecting or disassociating. Unfortunately, it gets me through daily life but keeps me from anything resembling closeness with friends, family, or anyone else. Thats the thing about cutting; it can really take over and isolate you from healthy forms of support that might get you through when you feel the need to SI. And wearing long pants and long sleeved shirts constantly sucks. I had to do a performance with the preschoolers I teach. We stood under the hot stage lights for an hour and I was sweating like I just ran a marathon. Then I had to go meet and greet parents. It was terrible.
