I'm trying to exercise daily. I was doing fairly well until I sprained my ankle 2 weeks ago but now I'm getting back on the horse. On Oct. 3 I attended a seminar on SI behaviors. We learned that indeed tattooing and piercing can be considered SI behaviors.
However, it depends on a few things. Number one, the age of the person. Number two, the number of piercings or tattoos. Number three, were they done in a clean professional setting or self done tattoos or piercings in unsanitary conditions.
For instance, I know a young man, he's 22 and has 27 piercings, all but 4 were done at home by himself. That would be considered excessive and a SI behavior.
Myself, I'm 42 have 2 tattoos, love the pain and relaxation (yes it relaxes me to get tattooed..like a day at the best spa in the world. Beta-endorphins are so awesome!!) but it wouldn't be considered a SI behavior for me because they've been professionally done and I only have a couple.
So, coming from a clinical point of view, I hope this clears it up a little for you.
Take care, God bless..Carolyn
