Scoliosis affects all ages. Unlike the naturally occurring curves in the spine, scoliosis causes the spine to curve abnormally to the left or right.

I had my spinal rod fusion done in 1983, 25 years ago and just here in the last few months, I have been in excruciating (spelling?) pain. There was one night in particular that I was in a deep sleep and was woke up with a stabbing pain in my lower back, I have never felt such pain even after all I have been through with kidney failure. Anyways, I went to an ortho doctor last week and the x-ray showed that the rods have shifted and it was no wonder I was in so much pain. He has now referred me to a spine specialist, November 28th and I have no idea what he might suggest to do. Has anyone else experienced this and if so, what did they end up doing for your rods that had shifted? Thanks to anyone in advance for your input/advice.

I'm trying to exercise daily. I was doing fairly well until I sprained my ankle 2 weeks ago but now I'm getting back on the horse. Today I walked over a mile with my arm weights that are about 22lbs total. I was out of shape and it was hard on my arms. I also did my 30 situps. I'm also going to drink a lot of water and try to eat healthy. I do tend to have a sweet tooth but I'm cutting...

The surgery to remove the rods is not nearly as long or difficult (at least for me) as the first surgery, but again my first surgery was in 1965 my second (rods out) in 1968). I would hope that things have improved immensely since then. I was only in hospital a few days, and in fact I was up and riding my horse again within two weeks. Finding a good doctor and family and friends to support you goes a long way.

so happy to hear your rods have not shifted...prayers are answered...I have had both cat scans and MRIs done...nothing invasive...MRIs are just noisy but head phones help...also have had epidurals with light anethiesia and the epidurals really helped the pain...best of luck to you...if I could be there to hold your hand I would (just the mother in me...(my daughter is 37)
