I picked up my son from the hospital today. He is doing much better under medication. My conditions for him coming home was for him to take his medication and attend outpatient therapy. However, he refuses to accept his diagnosis of paranoid schizophrenia. He told me that he will finish his current supply and no more. He said that he will go back to living on the streets rather than go to his weekly outpatient program. He said that he did not want to be a part of thier "experiment" . I tried to encourage him with saying how much better he seemed to be after taking the medicine. It will be sad to see him go back to the streets. He previously left and lived on the streets for a year. When he came home; he looked like he was on his last legs. This illness has ruined our lives. We have tried so hard to reach out and help him but he doesn't want to help himself. We are a quiet retired couple living very comfortably by the beach in a large home with all of the comforts. The pantry is full of good food and beverage. We treat him as advized by doctors and other information gathered on forums. Why would he give this up to live on the streets ? He is extremely stubborn and distrustful which makes it impossibe to change his mind. We are so sad knowing that this will probably not end well.
