Rheumatoid arthritis is a chronic, inflammatory, multisystem, autoimmune disorder. It is a disabling and painful condition which can lead to substantial loss of mobility due to pain and joint destruction. The disease is also systemic in that it often also affects many extra-articular tissues throughout the body including the skin, blood vessels, heart, lungs, and...
The other thing is that I was warned not to do any exercise or put any stress on my joints while I am in a flare. I have been in a flare, one right after the other for the last year. I think I see daylight ahead...I am slowing being weaned off the prednisone now that I am on Humira.
So my best advice to you is right now, don't listen to your body's signals about hunger - it lies! Journal what you eat, or even better plan out what you are going to eat in advance - that might help you keep control. The other thing is that while on prednisone, you never feel full. Your stomach may be bursting and your head still wants that next bite! Good luck...knowledge is power...jilly
Yes, I've gained weight taking prednisone, too. It is one of the lovely side effects. It also can cause depression; however, when the pain is untolerable it is something I have to take. I know the frustration of putting on the weight. Is seems like a vicious circle. Take care.

Now I am tapered to 5 mgs a day. I still have a healthy appetite but I am 10 lbs heavier than I want to be so I am really trying not to eat when I'm not hungry. I never ate like this before RA. I ate my 3 meals a day PERIOD
Does anyone notice loss of muscle tone since they started the prednisone? Now that I'm wearing summer clothes I'm really noticing. I was always built muscular.
I find RA has affected me more in these ways which then makes me "depressed" then pain wise.
Your question about Prednisone, weight gain and what to do about it is the most crucial issue that I have been struggling with since my diagnosis 4 months ago. I definitely put on weight as a result of the Prednisone. I am not sure how much but I do know that I went up one dress size (from 12 to 14). What to do about it? Well, gradually reducing the prednisone is your best bet. Adopting a diet that is high on vegetables and fruits and low on meat, dairy, and fat is something else to consider (I am on a macrobiotic diet with some cheating here and there), and, of course, exercising religiously (I try to stick to 45 minutes of gentle exercise every single day, including the weekends!) is a good thing too if you can do it. Good luck to you!
I'm on prednisone but still losing weight - I just eat less.
