I'm a little old, and don't feel the need to be violent.
How about gun safety training? Would a handgun add assurance and allow more freedom?

I gave my 2 week notice last Friday 13th. Now to join you fine people in a life of leisure and nothing else to do but to look out for myself....is it just me or does that sound pretty boring? My goal was to live to retire and I guess having to take early retirement because of health reasons wasn't exactly the way I had planned things. I just can't stay in that building that is reeking mildew...

I'm trying to exercise daily. I was doing fairly well until I sprained my ankle 2 weeks ago but now I'm getting back on the horse. Today I walked over a mile with my arm weights that are about 22lbs total. I was out of shape and it was hard on my arms. I also did my 30 situps. I'm also going to drink a lot of water and try to eat healthy. I do tend to have a sweet tooth but I'm cutting...
Gidzmo, that kind of reaction could be dangerous to people anywhere in range if you had a handgun.

You might want to check the rules and regs of your home state. Some will let you open-carry, some won't.
They absolutely love guns here in the south.
Our now former (people took a stand by-God) state senator passed legislation so loaded weapons could be carried even into bars and establishments where liquor is sold and drinking taking place, all in the name of public safety.
I saw him recently and spoke to him briefly. My first nursing job was working for his father at the local hospital he founded.
My youngest had a government class under him, and told him publicly he needed to rethink his position. I love that kid!
At any rate, the Brady Bill applies everywhere but here in the south it seems. Every step Chicago and other regions made forward, the south undermined. They even carry their guns to church on Sunday here, to exhibit their God given rights........
Didn't work for Bill Brady or President Regan, but I bet all that changes back and quicker than ever since a 'female' senator was gunned down.
But back on topic.
I don't feel the need to be violent. Do you think all this taught to you in rape crisis centers and YWCA is a benefit ?
Being a 'male' victim, I don't have access to any of that, so gun safety is all I could think of.

p.s. gizmo, did you get your chocolate huggie? I never got mine.
Some times people are drugged and then raped or raped while they are knocked out and in that case it doesn't matter how much training you have. And rape can often take place with someone we know and with someone that we let our guard down with. It can happen rather quickly when you don't have time to respond with what you were taught in training.
I am not trying to discourage any one from taking some defense classes or from learning how to use a gun. I am just saying that rape can happen to anyone and being a victm of rape doesn't mean that you are weak and that you can't defend yourself. Thank you for sharing and asking that question though Tomsintn. It is a very good question.
There just has to be another way to obtain power and sense of control other than violence.
Isn't that what put us in this situation in the beginning ?
I wish there was someone with enough intellect to describe the kinds of power that come through decency, decorum and self respect.
There is enough stress as it is.

No sweetheart, I'm quite serious.
I hope living at the violent level of your attacker will continue to make you happy (and healthy) through the years.
But as for me, I want the freedom that comes without fear and trepidation........... and having to defend myself against people who think violence cures violence.
I bet you've never experienced that have you.
