I'm usually a bit skeptical about some of those "warning" messages that get circulated via email, but this one did actually make sense so I'm going to share the basic info from it.
I received an email at work warning women about the dangers of having personal belongings on show in the car. Obviously we all know to keep our handbags out of sight, but it's the other non-valuable little feminine touches that can still mark our cars out as belonging to a lone women driver - the cuddly toys on the rear shelf, the tissues on the dashboard, the 'cute' air freshener, etc etc ......... apparently these are the signs that a predator will look out for in car parks, especially if it's quiet and there's not many other people around.
I'd never really given it much thought before, but now I keep my car looking as boring and bloke-ish as possible - thought I'd share this incase it helps someone else some day.
(I also lock myself in when I'm driving - I know this means the paramedics might have to cut me out of the car if I'm in a crash, but I think that's still a smaller risk.)

I'm trying to exercise daily. I was doing fairly well until I sprained my ankle 2 weeks ago but now I'm getting back on the horse. Today I walked over a mile with my arm weights that are about 22lbs total. I was out of shape and it was hard on my arms. I also did my 30 situps. I'm also going to drink a lot of water and try to eat healthy. I do tend to have a sweet tooth but I'm cutting...
And as far as locking your doors, its a smart idea. Comming from a paramedic/firefighter, i would rather have to cut you out in the event of an accident (which usually has to be done anyways) or have to bust out a window to get to you then to find you oneday with another attack and working in a big city this stuff happens especially at street lights. I've seen people pulled from their cars and raped.
stay safe everybody
but all these warning emails that get circulated... they undermine the fact that 80 percent of rapes are acquaintance rapes. they sort of perpetuate a myth that most people are raped by strangers on a dark night. which does happen, but that is not the usual situation.
(totally not trying to be bitchy or start a fight... i just wanted to mention that. i do agree that we need to be as safe as possible everywhere we go.)
