Psoriasis is an immune-mediated disease which affects the skin and joints. When it affects the skin it commonly appears as red scaly elevated patches called plaques. Psoriasis plaques frequently occur on the elbows and knees, but can affect any area of skin including the scalp and genital area. Psoriasis can also cause inflammation of the joints. I usually dont talk about my psoriasis with my friends but I made some passing comment today about how the cold, dry weather makes it worse and one of my best friends told me to suck it up because its not a real disease. I wanted to defend myself but that just made her angrier. People just dont understand the depression, embarrassment, and pain that come with psoriasis.

I know how you feel. Because it's not life threatening, people who don't have it consider it simply a "vanity" issue. I've actually had people tell that I'm just insecure. It's like what the h*** is that? If they had red, raw skin and looked disgusting in shorts or short sleeve shirts, they'd be insecure too. I hate that people trivialize it.

Wow, your friend is really insensitive! I have what I guess most people would consider 'mild' psoriasis and I have never felt so deprssed about the way I look. I feel like a freak. It is a very real disease but some people are simply incapable of understanding what they haven't experienced. I doubt your friend would cope so well and be so dismissive if she woke up covered in sores! Tell her to walk a mile in your shoes!

I think that people do not understand that is not just a vanity issue. It becomes red, dry, it cracks, it bleeds, it HURTS!! I haven't been able to sleep in three days. It causes physical pain as well as mental stress from our own insecurities and from the ignorance of other that do not understand. Forgive your friend and educate her so she doesn't act like a heartless goober again.

Here, you are with people that feel the same as you. I have just started to cope with this situation. I don't have a clue in what direction to head.

A "heartless goober" - lol - that's a good one, chick!

I have had people respond like that and even some of my closest friends will make an "innocent comment" or "joke" about my psoriasis without realizing how much it bothers me. It drives me nuts when my friend gets ONE zit on her face and freaks out and won't leave the house and then in summer thinks i'm a tard for not wanting to go to a pool party cause of my spots... cause "I'm over reacting" not her LOL we just gotta live with it... not everyone is going to understand. It sucks

I'm trying to exercise daily. I was doing fairly well until I sprained my ankle 2 weeks ago but now I'm getting back on the horse. Today I walked over a mile with my arm weights that are about 22lbs total. I was out of shape and it was hard on my arms. I also did my 30 situps. I'm also going to drink a lot of water and try to eat healthy. I do tend to have a sweet tooth but I'm cutting...
