A prolactinoma is a benign tumor of the pituitary gland that produces a hormone called prolactin. It is the most common type of pituitary tumor. I was first dx over 11yrs ago with pituitary tumor. At that time it was 8mm in size. I elected to have surgery and had the tumor removed. My surgeon then told me these tumors are extremely slow growing and rarely cancer. The medication only controls the release and over production of the hormone in the blood stream but does not stop the growth from growing. I know this because I have many patients of this tumor where they were on medication for over 20 yrs and eventually had to have the tumor removed. It all varies from individual to individual.
20% of the population have pituitary tumors without even knowing because they remain dormant and or slow growing with other any visible symptoms.
I hope this info does help.
Best wishes to you for good health always.
In 2005, the MRI showed a regrowth of a 5mm, non-secreting tumor. I am and have been taking 5mgs. of Parlodel since 2006. Prior to that year, I was taking 15mgs daily.
My only problems have been related to visual issues that are questionable regarding the status of the tumor.
It is something on the level of which came first, the chicken or the egg... in my case which came first, the tumor or the visual problem.. since I had surgery for Macular Pucker and cataract surgery in 2003.
Having dealth with the wonderful world of Endocrinology since 1978, it has been a never-ending discovery of multi-faceted medical mania for me.
I am not making fun of having such a medical problem, but when you study the Endocrine System and how it can generate so many other medical issues for the human body, it is a bit interesting to track the many trials and tribulations that follow an endo patient thoughout his or her lifetime.
Take care and best wishes.
