Prolactinoma Support Group
A prolactinoma is a benign tumor of the pituitary gland that produces a hormone called prolactin. It is the most common type of pituitary tumor. Symptoms of prolactinoma are caused by too much prolactin in the blood or by pressure of the tumor on surrounding tissues. Prolactin stimulates the breast to produce milk during pregnancy. After delivery of the baby, a mother's...
But let me tell you, those first 4 days were horrible. It was a little scary at times, because of the dizziness. I had been on this back in 2005 and I had to stop it because I couldn't handle the side effects. What is wierd is that this time, I am on a higher dose, I am on 5 mg last time it was 2.5 mg and this time I am handling it better.
My doctor had told me to take it before I go to bed, but that wasn't working for me as I was still feeling the effects in the morning, so I had to take it early in the evening. This I was determined to make this work, this ankle thing, I will deal with it.
I work at a doctor's office and I had a nurse practitioner look at it, she looked up the med and edema of the legs and ankles is a noted side effect. She had me call my endo doctor but I won't be hearing back from her until Tuesday. She did tell me though the doctor probably won't have a problem with me going on with the medication, this side effect is more of a nuisance than anything, if I can live a fat ankle, I'll be fine!! Which I am more than willing to do, shrinking this thing is the only way I will be able to have a baby, which is what I really want. My prolactin levels are only slightly elevated at 46, so she says on this med, I should probably be able to get pregnant easily, its just the size of the tumour and it pushing into my optic nerve. This is why I am on the med, to try and make it smaller so that this won't happen!
I won't be even hearing from mine until at least Tuesday. Like I said I was very unaware of this side effect as well. It wasn't until the nurse practioner where I work looked up the medication in her book that she found that side effect. Possibly it could be rare and that is why no one has really heard of that.
My ankle seems to be okay today. So hopefully this phase has passed.
The one other thing that happened to me was I had an iced cap the other day. I read on the print out that the pharmacist gave me that you are not supposed to drink coffee with Bromo, well I wasn't really thinking when I had the iced cap, I will not be doing that again. I felt horrible!!! It was like the side effects started all over.
My ankle has gone done as well, so hopefully it stays that way!!!
My prolactin level was at 46 when I started the Bromo, so we'll see what happens when I go back, I need this thing to shrink so it would be okay to get pregnant.
I took it at night with a meal. First morning, horrible dizzy spells to where I would just have to lay down right where I was standing. The dizziness finally passed after I ate food but was fatigued. The next morning I had dry cereal by bedside to eat before I got up to move around. This seemed to help with the dizziness. The fatigue continued however. Even still, I managed enough energy (with peer pressure) to meet my running friends. After exercise, I felt 100% better.
So my first week I have continued the dry cereal in the morning and I have kept up with exercising daily except for one day. I find that the exercise helps me feel like me and battles the fatigue. The one day I didn't exercise, I felt lost.
Now back to the ankle thing. By Thursday of the first week, I took a few steps out of my cube at work and my ankle twinged on me. At times I could barely put pressure on it. However, by the end of the day the pain went away and even managed a 3 mile run. I thought this to be bizarre until I read this post.
For now, I'm continuing with the dry cereal and workout plan plus I'm finding that I need to adjust my nutrition to help with some of the very small side effects that I feel after one week. It seems to be working. Hopefully, my experience can help others get through the rough moments.
Today is officially my 6th day on bromocriptine. Apart from dizziness i have'nt had any other side effects. Could be that i should count myself lucky or maybe because the dosage is so low. Currently im on 1.25mg and in a days times i would need to start 2.5mg. Hopefully it wont affect me that much.
How big is your macroadenoma? Mine is 10.3mm and my doc said to wait at least 6 months before trying for a baby. Could be because mine is not pressing on the optic nerve. So maybe the risks aint that great.
Does anyone know what " intralesional haemorrhage" is.
