Settle the tramadol question

Ok, I've heard that tramadol is "non narcotic" and therfore doesn't need to be a controlled substance. is it even a opiate? does it affect the same opiate receptor thingymebob in the brain as other opiates.
So, what does the phrase "non narcotic" exactly mean?
Cause it can get you messed up, trust me, you may have to take a lot (like around 10 at a time) to feel it, but it feels "narcotic" to me.
Also, stopping feels like stopping other opiates to me. sweating, insomnia, bad mood, needing bottle of imodium (ewww) and depression, intense depression.
but would a opiate treatment work with tramadol?
so weather its narcotic or not its got me hooked and I'm sure many others out there too. has anyone been told "you can't be addicted to that" or "is a safe pain killer" and stuff,

I'm trying to exercise daily. I was doing fairly well until I sprained my ankle 2 weeks ago but now I'm getting back on the horse. Today I walked over a mile with my arm weights that are about 22lbs total. I was out of shape and it was hard on my arms. I also did my 30 situps. I'm also going to drink a lot of water and try to eat healthy. I do tend to have a sweet tooth but I'm cutting...
tramadol was originally supposed to target lower back pain, but unlike other pain killers, it does not break down into morphine once in the body.
also the reason for the intense depression is that tramadol acts as an ssri. i have actually taken smaller doses to once a month maybe to help treat a really bad drop in my mood...that's in addition to taking zoloft though.
also, do not take large quantities of this if you take an ssri. it's common sense i think, but it can result in serotonin syndrome.
I used to take lots of percocet due to terrible pain, sometimes upward of 60mg, which was six times my normal dose. I never had any problems. Yet, several times, I'd take twice my dose of tramadol, and end up almost unable to breathe or become unconscious. I began to read about ultram (tramadol) and discovered that the amount needed to have permanent or lethal effects is closer to it's normal dose than the lethal amount of percocet is to it's normal dose. In other words, double your dose of tramadol is more likely to kill you than double your dose of percocet.
I'd stick with narcotic painkillers. Tramadol is almost as addictive, less effective, and more dangerous.
I'm a long-time user of percocet, and take much smaller doses nowadays, such as 15mg a day. I've suffered no mental or physical damage from percocet, and it helps with my pain. When on tramadol, I suffered confusion, slight motor problems, and generally an upset stomach. When taking more than directed, tramadol almost killed me, yet percocet never harmed me when using more than normal (just made me drowsy).
Either way, never take more than directed, but if you want the safest drug, go with percocet or vicoden rather than tramadol.
