I have been thinking a lot about how I would like to give birth, I gave birth in a hospital first time round, but in Portugal they don't give you much choice (it's very old fashioned). But I have said for a while now and before I found out this baby that I would like to have a home birth.
Does any of you have an opinion on home birth of experienced it themselves?

I'm trying to exercise daily. I was doing fairly well until I sprained my ankle 2 weeks ago but now I'm getting back on the horse. Today I walked over a mile with my arm weights that are about 22lbs total. I was out of shape and it was hard on my arms. I also did my 30 situps. I'm also going to drink a lot of water and try to eat healthy. I do tend to have a sweet tooth but I'm cutting...
Frankly I do not know why anyone would choose a midwife over a hospital. I know people say, well hospitals rush to c-section...but there is a reason they are doing so. There is a reason the death rate of newborns and mothers combined during childbirth is no longer statistically significant (1 death is significant)...
Think of this, any problems you may have, do you want your child in distress for the amount of time it takes for the midwife to call the hospital and you being admitted? In the US midwives cannot use suction or repair tears...It is just a risk that is incredibly frighting for me to think any woman would take.
However, your past experiences with hopsitals or doctors may be influencing a decision as well. Regardless, I respect anyone's personal choice, and do hope you the best with whatever route you do take.
I watch it on tv when some people have home births, and I look at them and I have so much respect for them. I personally don't think that I could do it. I need some kind of drug. I don't see anything wrong with it though. I think it would be kind of neat personally.
I would look into it more, do your own research and you will find that there is alot of information supporting homebirths. I am all for it, it is less stressful on the baby, it comes with less interventions as a midwife has more patience with a laboring mother than at a hospital setting. I would prefer to give birth at home however I waited to long to find a midwife and am stuck delivering at a hospital. I would think especially concidering that portugal is "very old fashioned"
How was your first birth? Was it fairly uncomplicated? Are you low-risk?
I will admit I am a little irritated when Maxell says that he hears horror stories from his "OB/GYN wife" of her having to repair the patches after a midwife has come across complications. Not all homebirths go as planned (most do) but if the "horror stories" that he is refering to come from a women needing a transport to the hospital than take that as hear-say. Complications arise in every setting, the fact is they arise less so at home and end up with a c-section in the hospital. I know that here in the US our medical system is overran by malpractice suits and it often dictates how a women is allowed to labor.
Either way do your own research, see what you find and then make a decision. My cousin just had a homebirth for her 2nd and it was such an amazing experience she says she wouldn't do it anyother way again. It makes me soo envious of women who have the option to give birth at home, but to each his own. Its really a decision you have to make for yourself. GOOD LUCK
It's up 2 u girl but plz make sure u do all the research.

I've done a bunch of research on it, just in case, and they say it should only be done in low-risk pregnancies. I have a number of risk factors, so I don't know if it would be a safe option for me. If your baby is presenting breech, they say its not a good idea to do it at home either.
If you're going to plan on doing this, get info and get registered at a hospital too, as a back up.
Good luck!!
all this to say that i learned two things. i want a midwife, and a personal experience, but when it comes time for the birth i want to be in a hospital. i just dont want to take any chances of being too far from medical help.
so thats my two cents. i havent had a child yet, but watching my sister cry for hours on end was enough for me.
