Some women do not have the strength to just leave ! For me I had to have someone to help me.I had been so beaten down I could no longer think or plan anything.A social worker saved my life of that I am sure. She visited me secretly while my husband was gone. She helped me to get some courage. She helped me make an exit plan as well. She helped me hide some clothes outside so I could run when needed. She helped me make copies of car keys because he hid them when he was mad at me to keep me from being able to leave. She told me what papers to take and where and how to hide them. She reasoned with me.She showed me where the battered woman's shelters where so I would have a place to go.Some women have no where to go.Some women don't know how they will pay the rent without a man.I found out about the government programs to help me, from food stamps to HUD housing.Sometimes a woman can't just leave. Please keep this in mind.It hurts my feelings when people say this. They don't know a woman can't just leave when the man has all the money in his control, the keys, the documents like birth certificates. It takes planning and support, encouragement.Plus time for the woman to get in the right mindset to have the mental strength to go.
