A week and a half ago, took both dogs in to get checked for heartworm before restarting meds for it for the upcoming season. Both had been medicated for years against it. The younger was negative, but CoCo was positive. She's 6 yrs. old, a rescue dog, St. Bernard/Boxer mix, and a sweetheart. A second test confirmed the positive result, so now vet is tangling with med manufacturer to pay for treatment, since he sees it as a failure of their product. I know heartworm is fatal left untreated. If the drug company doesn't pay for treatment, I don't know how we can pay. CoCo is not having symptoms yet, though she can get a bit out of breath at times. It kills me to think we may have to put her to sleep because of the almighty dollar, or rather the lack of it. How does one cope with the fact money is what stands between life and death for one of our loyal companions? How do we look them in the eye, knowing what may be in store? I hope to find out this week what the manufacturer will do, so maybe this is all premature, but I'm having a bad feeling about this, and need to prepare for the worst.
