My son has had this problem several times. I don't know if it's related to teething or what, but he will out of the blue get a watery stool and since it's like a little water we don't necessarily notice it immediately so his bottom has gotten horribly scorched. It happened again last night. He was bleeding! I feel so horrible for not changing him fast enough. He was in extreme pain/agony.
I just don't know the best medication for it. I use bordeaux butt paste as well as neosporen (on the raw spot). I rinse the detergent out of the wipes w/warm water to try to wipe him, but usually end up putting him in the tub. I was in tears literally last night as well as the other time he bled.
Help! The gold bond powder seems to burn him (since he is very irritated already). Anything else good? I thought about putting some baking soda in the tub. Would that help or hurt??? I can't stand seeing him suffer. It usually clears up in a coulple of days and once it starts we really change him excessively to keep the moisture down.
Thanks!

I'm trying to exercise daily. I was doing fairly well until I sprained my ankle 2 weeks ago but now I'm getting back on the horse. Today I walked over a mile with my arm weights that are about 22lbs total. I was out of shape and it was hard on my arms. I also did my 30 situps. I'm also going to drink a lot of water and try to eat healthy. I do tend to have a sweet tooth but I'm cutting...
Now for the rash. I have tried many things over the years and 5 kids. The Gold Bond does burn with open sours. What I found works best is DESITIN. It is a soothing cream that not only heals the rash but if used at each change will be a moisture barrier to prevent the rash.

There are a few old time remedies that friends swear by (I've never tried them). One is cornstarch.... after cleaning affected area apply cornstarch to baby's bottom. But be very careful using corn starch. What may look like a diaper rash may actually be a yeast infection (quite common). Using corn starch will feed the yeast and make the rash worse, not better .... if it is a yeast infection you should use Lotrimin antifungal creme or have your doc prescribe Nystatin ointment.
The other home remedy is Maalox (seriously) apply with cotton to the affected areas and let dry until white. This helps to neutralize acid before and after they are wet and has a cooling effect while drying. You can apply other creams over the Maalox.
Sam is a fruit eater so maybe he's eating too much recently. Thanks again everybody. It's agonizing knowing he's in that much pain.
So here's what I do, I use only the Pampers Sensitive Wipes (no fragrance, alcohol, or perfumes)...in the beginning when her bottom was open, I only used warm water to cleanse the area and I let the water run over her bottom, I didn't wipe. It's a pain, but you're doing well to put him in the tub for now I think.
I read a great article on diaper rashes that said to protect the skin on their tushies you should "grease and flour them like you would a cake pan". I love LOVE the Bordeaux Butt Paste that you're currently using...I tried everything and read and researched all the ingredients and I liked that stuff the best. It's the only thing I use. I coat her with the butt paste and then I "flour" on a top coat of plain old corn starch.
And then you don't wipe it off when you're changing unless the diaper is messed. For wet diapers, I just remove the old diaper and put on a fresh one and leave the coating of paste/powder on her bottom. of course it gets washed at bedtime when she takes her bath, but other than that leave it on if you can.
I wouldn't put anything in the tub right now. I would just use water. Good luck and I hope your little one is feeling better very soon! I felt for you when you were saying you were "literally in tears" dealing with it because I so remember being there, where I would just cry because I couldn't stand for her little bottom to be hurting so much! It will heal up...and he won't remember any of this...you're doing a good job, mom's TLC is the ultimate medicine every time!
