Hi, I'm new to this group an am hoping for some parenting 101 advice. My 25 year old daughter is a qualified attorney. She is very bright and academically far above our greatest expectations. The problem is that she is so incredibly innocent, gullible and sees the good in everyone. She was to be engaged in December but that didn't work out and destroyed her tender heart. She is now involved with a young man that we believe is milking her financially and emotionally. We believe he has an alcohol problem and maybe even drugs. He lies constantly and manipulates her emotionally. None of the "bad luck" that befalls him is ever his fault. He has just lost his job, again. He has not managed to replace his "stolen" driver's license or bank card or identification documents in 4 months, his car was "scrapped" so he has no transport and she drives him everywhere. He has bought a townhouse that he hasn't moved into and no-one has seen in 4 months. He goes out and gets drunk, then expects my daughter to fetch him at midnight from some seedy pub. We are not a wealthy family and have invested everything we have in our daughters. It's breaking our hearts to see him use her the way he does. We have raised our concerns and she listened in silence. I feel like every weekend is yet another problem with this boy. It is starting to impact on the whole family and has most certainly caused a division between my daughter and ourselves. My brother-in-law is a alcoholic and all the telltale signs are there. How to we stop my daughter from a life of heartbreak and financial destruction? Please, please help. We don't want to lose our daughter because she feels the need to be in a relationship with this boy.
Sorry I have been MIA the last week or so. I have been so burdened with school work, and trying to catch up, after my trip to Toronto. I would also like to thank smil and Shadowlady, who have been posting in my absence.I also need prayer. I am quitting my PhD program. It was not about being behind, this institute is excellent about giving accomodations. It is about my health. My hands are...
