You need to realize your limits and never over-extend yourself. Then you need to stand your ground. The way I look at it is that we are no good to those we love and cherish if we don't feel good ourselves. Guilt should never factor in here. From your post you thought you might be okay... but you had a recent ear infection and sore throat. Based on that alone I would have firmly but lovingly explained to Theres that it was too short notice and that you need at least a few days notice to organize and get groceries and make sure that you were feeling up to it (in light of how you were feeling before).
If she is a lovely enough girl for you to want to do something special for her, then she must be a lovely enough girl to understand.
Hope you get to reschedule and enjoy celebrating her, her birthday, her friends and the time she spent with your family.
