COURTESY CODE FOR CHILDREN

deleted_user
I have been a Parenting Advisor, here on Daily Strength for a year & a half now and I am continually amazed at the amount of postings I read about children and their poor behavior. Don't get me wrong, it's basically our children's job to act up and out of line, but it's OUR job to help them learn the way. We, as parents, need to teach them wrong from right... and very young children, learn by example. If we do not model good behavior, why do we expect them too?
Anyhow, at my son's school, they enforce a COURTESY CODE. And they take it VERY seriously. It's painted on the walls, it's discussed in class and it's sent home in contract form for both the children and the parents to sign. We have the courtesy code hanging in our home.... I think it's so important for us to model this behavior for our children and remind our children (sometimes we have to remind a lot) of these socially important rules. These are not just for school. These should be modeled in everyday situations.
In just 3 months, I'm shocked how often my 5 year old son refers to "The Courtesy Code."
I don't think 2 and 3 years old is too early to start!
1. When someone speaks to me I will make contact and respond respectfully. (When someone says good morning I will say good morning back.
2. When I enter or leave a room, I will say Hello and Goodbye to the people in the room. (I will use their names if possible).
3. If I dont know someones name, I will ask and introduce myself to them,.
4. I will hold the door for the person behind me.
5. I will stop and listen before entering a conversation (I will say excuse me during a pause in the conversation before speaking).
6. I will say please and thank you whenever I ask for something or receive something.
7. I will clean any mess that I see, even if I didnt make it. I will offer to help others and be responsible for my own messes

I'm trying to exercise daily. I was doing fairly well until I sprained my ankle 2 weeks ago but now I'm getting back on the horse. Today I walked over a mile with my arm weights that are about 22lbs total. I was out of shape and it was hard on my arms. I also did my 30 situps. I'm also going to drink a lot of water and try to eat healthy. I do tend to have a sweet tooth but I'm cutting...
Respect (to feel or show honor for someone or something),
Citizenship (to do your share to help your family and community),
Caring (to be kind, helpful and generous to everyone),
Trustworthiness (to be honest, to tell the truth and keep promises),
Fairness (to agree to and to follow rules or standards, to treat everyone equally), and
Responsibility (to do what you are supposed to do and be accountable for consequences of their choices).
It is a good guideline to start with and I know the school hopes the parents will build on these ideas and use them at home.
