This is a phase and with some understanding and hugs, he'll grow out of it.
They have a lot of great "night lights" these days. My son has the "fish tank" light and he loves it. The fake fish swim around and around and it puts out just the right amount of light for him. It's very soothing for him. My daughter has a butterfly lamp that projects butterflies onto her walls and ceiling and she loves that but she also still has her musical birds crib toy that she sleeps with and it plays relaxing music while the birds flutter about.
There are also a number of great books that discuss darkness and monsters... you can search the recommendation section in this community or check Amazon.
