The American Academy of Pediatric (AAP) now recommends two doses of the varicella (AKA chicken pox) vaccine beginning between 12 to 15 months of age.
Most parents of toddlers through young adolescents are aware of the varicella vaccine secondary to its availability since the mid 1990s.
There has been much success from the single dose of varicella vaccine as we have seen approximately a 75% decrease in the reported number of varicella cases, a nearly 90% decrease in varicella-related hospitalizations, and over a 90% decrease in varicella-related deaths in 1- to 4-year-old children when compared with the prevaccine era.
But despite these significant outcomes, the risk of breakthrough cases appears to be rising as the number of years post-immunization increases, indicating a possible waning of immunity as well as a certain percentage of the population not becoming adequately immunized after only one dose.
Therefore, new reccomendations now include a 2nd dose of the varicella vaccine, typically to be given at school entry but discuss with your pediatrician for further details.

I can count 4 times this year when I Went out of my way to make sure a "friend" felt good on their birthday, especially if they got left hanging. Its early in the...
