mine are not walking or crawling yet but my neice did not crawl she walked right away at 7 months.

randomly, my aunt who has been a kindergarten teacher for decades says that if babies walk and never really crawl, they have problems with reading later in life... I'm not sure if that is backed up with any sort of fact or not, but thought it was interesting!

MsH---That is funny that your aunt said that because my daughter never crawled, she started walking when she was 6 1/2 months old. She was a very smart and verbal baby and toddler but when it came time to learn how to read she had the hardest time. It really stressed me out because I am an English teacher. She was just so stubborn, she thought she knew what the words said and she wouldn't let anybody tell her differently. She finally got the hang of reading and at 17 years old she is doing great in school and getting ready for college.

So to respond to the original post---yes my DD did exactly what you describe and she never crawled.

My brother has a Phd in child development and says that it's fairly common for children to just start walking without crawling. From all the research that has been done, this will not have any effect on their abilities later in life (though like MsH said, some have said there is a correlation with reading issues, but my brother and many of his collegues believe it's not true). The way my brother explained it to me is that some babies don't enjoy being on their tummy, like you described and have an easier time just walking.

My daugher is 7 months old and she has been crawling for about 2 weeks now. She also stands. Like your baby I think she may be in a bit of a rush to see what is going on. When she crawls we notice that if she sees somethign interesting she'll stop in mid crawl and try to stand up.

...Sounds like it is possible to walk before you crawl...that so amazing to me.

Brianna started crawling at 6 months.she pulls up and tries to take a step..But yes some babies do walk before they crawl.

In order for the brain to wire properly the baby must crawl first...crawl then walk...

There is a reason to crawl first. I have known children that walked then crawled and had to go and learn to crawl. This is why tummy time is crucial...muscular development...brain development...

Crawl then walk...

My DD also hates being on her tummy, and at 5 months prefers to be sitting or standing (with help of course) and refuses to even lay on her tummy w/o a big tantrum. I have many friends who say the same thing. So yes, I think it's possible to take first steps before actual crawling! But like a few people have said, I think that crawling is crucial for motor development, so we still encourage tummy time (or torture time as she would call it!)

I think most people are forgetting what I'm asking in my discussion. I understand it's important for them to get proper motor skills. I would like to know if anyone's little one did they same thing my daughter is doing. Did they end up crawling before walking or straight to walking?

Sorry for not answering. My DD did what your daughter is doing and she never crawled. She started walking when she was about 6 1/2 months. Before that she was pulling up on everything. She was full out running by the time she was 8 months. Good luck it is such a fun and exciting time!!!!!!
