Two years ago this week, at about 9pm, there was a quick knock at the door and a scurry of feet and laughter. When I opened the door, there was nobody there, but on the doormat was an orange and black paper back and on the front it said, "You've Been Booed!"
Inside the bag were a couple of little halloween toys, a piece of candy, a xerox copy of a ghost and a chain letter. The instructions said to make two copies of the ghost picture and the chain letter. Then we were to hang one picture in our window or on the front door so others would know we'd already been "Booed." Then we were to create two bags of our own, put a copy of the chain letter and the ghost picture in each bag and secretly "boo" two other friends who didn't already have ghosts on their doors or windows.
On that night, a tradition was born! My son had so much fun trying to figure out who had "booed" him & we picked out great little trinkets at the party store, such as halloween erasers/pencils, pumpkin bubbles and seasonal candy. We just use paper lunch bags and draw pictures on the bags or decorate them with stickers, but it's so much fun! Last year, we had so much fun I almost wet my pants laughing so hard! It's really something we all look forward to and now we try to see who can get the others first, but you can't start "booing" until the week before Halloween night...no fair.
Anyway, it's great fun. If anyone would like a copy of the chain letter, let me know and I can e-mail it to you. You can make the ghosts yourself by just drawing a simple outline and making copies, or you can get creative and make felt ones to hang on the doornobs. I recently saw ready-made "boo bags" at Target, but they were 4.99 each and the homemade ones are less expensive, more creative and lots more fun!
Happy "Booing!"

I'm trying to exercise daily. I was doing fairly well until I sprained my ankle 2 weeks ago but now I'm getting back on the horse. Today I walked over a mile with my arm weights that are about 22lbs total. I was out of shape and it was hard on my arms. I also did my 30 situps. I'm also going to drink a lot of water and try to eat healthy. I do tend to have a sweet tooth but I'm cutting...
This idea, the Switch Witch idea...all brilliant.
But I think I would have been very wary would I to have been presented with an unknown sack on my door step. I would have gotten out the meat hammer and blugeoned it just to make sure. And I could just see me getting maimed by someone's attack dog or shot as I lovingly put a boo bag down on someone's doorstep. I think I need to move to Iowa for this to work.
I'm kidding, really. I think I'd like to do it. Better that than trick-or treating, methinks. But to stay on the safe side, I think we'll only do it for people we already know. Less likely to be arrested that way, maybe. I'll message you my email address.
Have a happy, fun, and safe Halloween!!!
I think that sometimes the kids get so nervous & excited going up to the door that they either don't check for another picture or they're in such a rush that it doesn't register that one is already there....but it's all in good fun and if you WANT to keep booing, well then you are super mom and you should go for it!!! :) :) :)
I'm glad you've been having fun with this. I don't know how long this has been going on or who thought of it, because we didn't get our first "boo" until my oldest was in 1st grade. We kept the papers from that year and we've initiated a couple & forgot to put a picture in our own window, so then sort of got "stuck" having to do more once we got booed. It's now a tradition and a part of Halloween that I really look forward to, almost as much as stockings at Christmas!
